Altering Time

But a small change is often all that it takes

Time always sneaks up on me no matter how much planning I do. When it comes to execution, I always feel I can squeeze more in than is realistic. Its tricky.

When I get frustrated, I think about how far I've already come and how far I want to go. I think about my support system and the people I am surrounded by.  I'm supported by people I never imagined and sometimes I'm disheartened by the ones I really thought would.

But ultimately, sometimes it's the most distant people, the ones who didn't grow up the way you did, the ones who lived a completely different life than you, that are able to support you the most.

I am trying to take something standard like time, and support, and think about it in a less permanent way.  Opening up to acceptance that not everything will fit into a specific time or space that we have defined, like an idea of support, or timeframes we have set bounds on, is relieving.  For all of you following or supporting my journey, I'm thankful. I need you. We all need a support system and you never know what you're doing to build someone up or break them down.

I chose to feature Pandeia watches alongside my jewelry because I feel that it stands for more than most watch companies.  Pandeia is so different.  They take something as structured as time and give it freedom.  They encourage exploration which enables self discovery.

Maybe, I like Pandeia because I feel a bond there.  A bond in style but also in thought.  It takes time and changes your perspetive on it.  It makes a definitive element ambiguous.  To me, not only do Pandeia watches look amazing and are a company I can stand behind (hello, handcrafted!) but they're easy to style and give a dressed up look some edge or fit right there with your hiking gear.  Tell me thats not a win, win.

Failure is Learning

If you cannot fail, you cannot learn

I started this blog, with a force and momentum.  I knew what I wanted to accomplish and stayed on track.  But it got tough to keep up.  Its work, more work than I realistically had time for on top of everything else.  I tried staying on top of it, but I failed.  In part.  I've taken a step back and reorganized because, Eric Ries was right.  "If you cannot fail, you cannot learn".

Its true in everything.  I've failed more times than I can count but its propelled me forward because I want to get better; I don't want to fail again.  Think of how your fails have led you to learn.  Did you suck at a sport but recognize that concentration on why exactly you're sucking, paired with practice, launch you into that sweet spot? How about school?  Maybe in a different perspective you failed at math but it taught you to focus on your creative side.  We've all had styling fails, (que all the bad outfit photos) but now I bet you have a handle on what clothing works best on your body.

The point is..without failure, we don't aim to learn.  We learn because we don't want to fail again, we naturally want to succeed.  You have to be thankful for all the fails, they make you, you, and give you an edge up on someone who has not yet failed at what you have.

Protecting the Asset

The best asset we have for making a contribution to the world is ourselves
— Greg McKeown

You must invest in the complete you.  Every bit of you, without skimping.  You must invest in your mind, your body, and your spirit.  If you don't take the time to, you might miss the opportunity to offer the world something that no one else can, a full and unique you.  I have been taking the time to invest in myself.  It's hard and believe it or not, actually takes work.

There might be backlash from those around you that don't fully understand or take the time to really open their eyes to what it is you are after.  But don't let that discourage you.  I've realized that if I don't value and put myself first, things I don't want filling that space, start to take up room, and clearing it all back out can be a lengthy process.

Start now.  Invest in yourself so that you can give the world something that no one else can.

Living & Inanimate

The most notable distinction between living and inanimate beings is that the former maintain themselves by renewal
— Dewey

Do not be stagnate.  Do not be afraid to grow.  There will be ups and downs for sure, but try not to let those scare you.  Sometimes its hard to trust the process and enjoy the journey when you have an end game in mind but you'll miss so many of the good things if you don't consciously look for the joys in the little things.  Taking a breath, hanging out, and doing nothing, can sometimes be the best thing for you when you're constantly moving 500 miles an hour.

Imagination is everything

Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions
— Albert Einstein

We are a nation that encourages disruption, a culture that praises boldness and creativity.  But that doesn't always make it easy.  Today, everyone is an entrepreneur.  Everyone believes they are creative and may even tell you that they can do what you do.  Prove them wrong.  If you're going to do it, do it better.

Passion speaks loudly.  Hardwork shines.  At least that is what I will continue to believe.  It's beautiful to believe it is far from all for naught, isn't it?

Facts vs Attitudes

Attitudes are more important than facts
— Dr Karl Menninger

How amazing is it that just changing your attitude about things can alter them for not only yourself, but also for others?

I could look at things factually 24/7, but that would be no fun.  And likely, mentally trying.  Take this little shoot for example.  I could tell you about its location, factually,...we shot behind a drug store.  On a back street.  Lined invasively with harsh blue garbage bins along the edge.  There was overgrown shrubbery that served as a backdrop for EMTs waiting on calls, in their ambulances.  And construction trucks chugged along blowing black smoke out of their tailpipes.

OR, I could speak of the magic that this alley way held.  The grassy peeks popping through the cobblestone pathway lent such a homeliness it was nearly irresistible.  We were surrounded by gorgeous trees, reaching their blooms gracefully into the walkway just waiting to lend you some shade.

You can feel the difference, can't you?  How you feel about a fact can defeat you before you even have the chance to recognize it is too late.  Don't let that happen.  I hope the next time you fail to see the beauty in the norm or get down on a situation, you create a mind shift for yourself.

Creativity Risks

If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never be creative
— Ken Robinson

How important is it to take risks?  How often do you work it into your everyday life?

I've always been so harsh on myself, holding high standards, often disappointing myself because I felt I could never live up to my own expectations.  I bet there is more than one of you out there who feel the same.  I'll be the first to admit the good and bad in that.  I've always been scared to try because I'm afraid to fail.  If there wasn't the slightest shimmer of success on the horizon, you could count me out.  Being a perfectionist and having a creative mind can work in complete harmony and complete opposition, all at the same time.

I've made a promise to myself to allow more risks, and I am accepting that things will not always work out perfectly.  So far?  I'm not regretting it.  Welcome to the Queen City Gypsy blog; let the adventure begin.
