The Selfie Game

This is going to be a tough one.  I told myself at the start of this post, maybe it's time to say it.  But then I wondered if it was necessary.  I wondered, *I wonder*, is it too much to talk about?  Is it too much to reveal, to pull back the curtains on it?  I am even questioning it as I type this.  But, I hope I'll keep going.

In honesty, I started this blog as a place to create more content for my jewelry brand.  Period.  I wanted growth.  As it developed, I discovered I was digging deeper, I was relearning my love of writing, my love of looking to people who are wiser, and putting their enlightenment out there for not only myself to learn from, but for other people too.  I found I started looking at how I lived, how I went about my day-to-day, how I viewed the world, and how I viewed myself.

queen city, queen city gypsy, indie twenty, selfie game, selfie game strong, confidence, bloopers, accepting you, blogging bloopers, blogging behind the scenes, buffalo blogger, buffalo blogging network, buffalo fashion blogs, small business owners buffalo, women owned business buffalo

It bought me to consider the selfie game.  I recently heard a speaker referencing the selfie, and, rightfully-so, equated it to an extreme narcissistic practice.  I see his point.  In some instances, in A Lot of instances, I agree.  Do you know how many pictures I took just to try and get some I thought worthy of sharing?  I kept the crappy ones just to give an honest reveal, that its not easy; people don't particularly choose to show their ugly side, for obvious reasons.

For me its different.  Don't get me wrong, sometimes, I feel pretty.  Sometimes its just a cute outfit, or a good hair day and I succumb to the selfie (#guilty). Sometimes, its more; sometimes, I feel like I am good enough.  Good enough for the people I'm in front of on the daily, good enough for my family, good enough for my boyfriend, good enough for the girls around, or good enough for anyone else I pass.  And I want to capture that.  As a reminder to myself.  For those days when I don't feel good enough, for when the doubt creeps in, for when I question why I am the way that I am, for when I struggle to accept myself, or for when I want to be better.  It helps me to remember, hey, maybe you shouldn't be so hard on yourself, because sometimes, you are good enough.

I tell you this, and I hope you'll take it in stride.

I take pictures because, I grew up, feeling compared.  (Don't we all? *cough*cough* get over it, Rach, right?) I felt unacknowledged for things that I cared about.  This is not to say it came from my parents, so do not take that and run with it.  I just mean in life, everywhere.  In school, in social settings, in sports, you name it.  I remember direct comparisons from people who had no idea what they were doing to my confidence, to my mental strength.  They're some of my clearest memories.  I was never bitter, nor am I now.  I am by no means trying to make that the point.  Growing up, that can mess with you a little.

Maybe I was too sensitive.  Probably.  Who knows. But thats who I was as a kid.  Unfortunately, sometimes one thing will overpower another.  I gave other people control over me, because I felt they were probably right, or that they likely deserved whatever it was, over me.  I took the back seat.  My insecurity grew roots in every aspect of my life.

I take pictures of myself because, now, I am good enough. I'm good enough to get past abusive relationships where I was put down and degraded, where I was controlled, and isolated, and blind to what was happening.  I'm better than being kicked out of a house and crawling back, I'm better than being told I am replaceable, and I am better than having to walk on eggshells, carry myself differently, or pretend to be someone I'm not.  I'm better than silencing my voice, and trying to please everyone.  Its amazing how those kinds of things can linger.  Even when they're long gone and I've learned that I am more powerful than that.  That no one should ever be treated like that, sometimes those negative experiences can creep back in.  Sometimes I can start to feel, not pretty enough, not fit enough, not smart enough nor driven enough.  I have to aggressively push those feelings away from myself, ban them from my brain.

I'm wise enough to look back at where I've come from and how I've developed as a person because of all of those things.  I may not like it and it may not be easy, but I can't change it, I have grown into who I am because of it.  That is why I take selfies.

Fashion x Technology: Mezzi Handbags

It’s whats on the inside that counts
mezzi tech handbag, charging handbag, handbags that charge your phone, indie twenty, indie brand rep, handmade jewelry, ryan kell photography, buffalo designer, small business buffalo, boho handbags, suede tech clutch, patterned bells, patterned pants, boho outfit inspiration

When I was approached by Mezzi to test out their [AMAZING] handbags, I couldn't pass up the opportunity.  Could you?  They're absolutely gorgeous.  Like so pretty, I'm almost afraid to use it sometimes.  (Anyone else only everrrr ruin their best pieces!?)

The bag that I fell in love with was this guy right here, the Amelia Crossbody.  I use it mostly as an oversized clutch but it came with a wristlet AND a longer crossbody strap.  I should probably branch into those, huh?  The perks of the bag are that it actually comes with a super sleek external charger for your phone (which I use all the time. obvi.) and Trackr Integration technology.   But to be honest, I love the bag for its gorgeous design.  The quality is awesome.

In a nutshell, you should probably check them out, you wont be sorry.

Acceleration

I'm a planner.  I used to be very spontaneous.  My mom taught me that my whole life.  I found value in living on the edge and flying by the seat of your pants. But in more recent years, I've found that I plan and I list things out, and I plan some more.

Realistically, I know one million things will change on the way to those plans and I'll need to roll with the punches BUT I. can't. stop. planning.  I can't stop setting goals and trying to figure out how to get there. Which is okay, but I think it had made me afraid to really put things in motion.  In honesty, I plan for my big moves, yes, but when it comes down to it, I just keep planning and analyzing and tip toeing.  (sound familiar?) I'm scared.  But what is the point if you never learn to accelerate?

I must now take what I have learned, and all the resources that have come into my world and make a move. Because repetition will drive me crazy if I only seek out my dreams on paper.

Altering Time

Time always sneaks up on me no matter how much planning I do. When it comes to execution, I always feel I can squeeze more in than is realistic. Its tricky.

When I get frustrated, I think about how far I've already come and how far I want to go. I think about my support system and the people I am surrounded by.  I'm supported by people I never imagined and sometimes I'm disheartened by the ones I really thought would.

But ultimately, sometimes it's the most distant people, the ones who didn't grow up the way you did, the ones who lived a completely different life than you, that are able to support you the most.

I am trying to take something standard like time, and support, and think about it in a less permanent way.  Opening up to acceptance that not everything will fit into a specific time or space that we have defined, like an idea of support, or timeframes we have set bounds on, is relieving.  For all of you following or supporting my journey, I'm thankful. I need you. We all need a support system and you never know what you're doing to build someone up or break them down.

I chose to feature Pandeia watches alongside my jewelry because I feel that it stands for more than most watch companies.  Pandeia is so different.  They take something as structured as time and give it freedom.  They encourage exploration which enables self discovery.

Maybe, I like Pandeia because I feel a bond there.  A bond in style but also in thought.  It takes time and changes your perspetive on it.  It makes a definitive element ambiguous.  To me, not only do Pandeia watches look amazing and are a company I can stand behind (hello, handcrafted!) but they're easy to style and give a dressed up look some edge or fit right there with your hiking gear.  Tell me thats not a win, win.

Of my 27 years, theres been many an influential tid bit spoken by my mom; but that one resonated deeply with me the very first time she said it.

I've been having life conversations more frequently with not only family and friends but with some of the most unexpected people I meet. The outcome is something I am learning to love.  I think it's helped me verbalize my thoughts and feelings toward people and about life events and interactions but I can see the influence it's having on those I'm talking with too.

I can hear the concern in their voice change and melt when they get to talk about something meaningful. I see the comfort in their body language, I can feel judgement melt away. It's okay to have different views and it's okay to disagree as long as you are still carrying an element of respect and a compassion for the heart.

Home

I live in my own little world. But its ok, they know me here
— Lauren Myracle

Home is a place that should be revered.  No matter how quickly you've chosen to pack up and move or how the thought of leaving is the furthest thing from your mind, home is your foundation. It sticks with you.  You cannot sever those roots and remain the same.

Buffalo is my home.  I've lived away in several cities over the years for months at a time but Buffalo is where I grew up.  A few years ago, I cringed at the thought of building a home of my own here, but now, I couldn't be more thankful for the way things took course.

This print from Modern Map Art hangs in my brand new office and I just hadddd to share it with you.  Tell me its not sleek and well done...right!?  I never thought a map print could become one of my favorite framed pieces to display but I couldn't have been more wrong.  I love love, love it, and now I want ones for the other cities that captured my heart too (hello, London!)

Live Deeply

I so often get caught up in the, "what next?".  I'm planning, I'm saving, I'm dreaming, and I'm doing.  I'm trying to keep up with myself.  I've made a conscious effort to seek my version of success and I cannot achieve it without all of those things, the dreaming, the planning and the doing.  But it gets tiring.  It is a shallow way of living.  And time and again, I've noticed my days, simply just, pass by.

I am now trying to, with my goals still in mind, prioritize and do less.  I am trying to restructure not only my daily tasks, but my mind.  To be completely in the moment with each event.  Its hard and it takes practice.  I've discovered that it takes time to train your brain to be fully present.  By focusing on the present and not the next piece of the puzzle to come or the next shoe to drop, taking joy in the moment is effortless.  And I want that.

I started this blog, with a force and momentum.  I knew what I wanted to accomplish and stayed on track.  But it got tough to keep up.  Its work, more work than I realistically had time for on top of everything else.  I tried staying on top of it, but I failed.  In part.  I've taken a step back and reorganized because, Eric Ries was right.  "If you cannot fail, you cannot learn".

Its true in everything.  I've failed more times than I can count but its propelled me forward because I want to get better; I don't want to fail again.  Think of how your fails have led you to learn.  Did you suck at a sport but recognize that concentration on why exactly you're sucking, paired with practice, launch you into that sweet spot? How about school?  Maybe in a different perspective you failed at math but it taught you to focus on your creative side.  We've all had styling fails, (que all the bad outfit photos) but now I bet you have a handle on what clothing works best on your body.

The point is..without failure, we don't aim to learn.  We learn because we don't want to fail again, we naturally want to succeed.  You have to be thankful for all the fails, they make you, you, and give you an edge up on someone who has not yet failed at what you have.

Capability

Do not doubt your capacity, your capability. You are capable. Do you hear me?

As of lately, I've had to remind myself that I am the only one who can determine my capabilities.  We are all capable of extraordinary things.  I've once again let the earthly doubt kick in and prey on my confidence and will to move forward.  I've been ask why, and how, and when, in regards to "my time".  I'd forgotten.

Don't let that happen to you.  Remember you were not made to be average.

Sometimes I swear I torture myself with the back and forth of: Can I do it? Yes, I can. Are you sure? Probably not. Why am I trying this? Just give up. No. You can't give up. Just keep working.
I know I was meant to be something more and I am capable of achieving greatness. I have the capacity and so do you.

Try not to be average.

Ideas in themselves are beautiful things.  The potential. The excitement. The challenge. The questioning. The realization. The uncertainty. The instability. And the bad ones.

Ideas are beautiful, not perfect.  They can be fleeting or rack your brain.  Have you ever felt you let an idea go too soon?  Dismissed it to early?  Some, without a doubt, may be worth leaving behind, but I find myself more and more, looking deeper into each and every idea so they can all live up to their potential.  I think ideas are what drive us and excite us. Don't let someone shoot yours down just because they don't see what you see.

A Wild & Prescious life

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
— Mary Oliver

How many lives do you dream of in a day?  I can honestly say I float between at least 4.  Not kidding.  I see myself doing so many different things.  Not sure if thats a good or bad thing, or anything at all, but its the truth of my mind.  Never in a million years did I think I would be where I am today.  And I bet any money, if you asked me a year from now, I wouldn't have an answer then either.

Rhythm & Harmony

Rhythm and harmony sink most deeply into the recesses of the soul, and take the most powerful hold of it
— Plato

Did you ever find that you flock to the power of music?  In sadness, in anger, in love, and in happiness.  Music is a powerful tool, it awakens the heart.  Music intensifies the senses.  It satisfies them.  Songs can bring you back to a certain place and time, somewhere you can live forever.  How?  Why?  I'm not sure why I love this quote so much.  Maybe its because I can't find an explanation for it.

Any good tunes to share?  Let me know below!

Steady Thoughts

It is a pain to children to keep their thoughts steady to anything
— Locke
Queen city gypsy, steady thoughts quote, indie twenty, john locke quote, it is a pain to children to keep their thoughts steady to anything

Children?  And maybe an adult or two (*unabashedly raises hand*).  I could entertain myself for hours.  I don't remember the last time I was "bored".  For real, boredom isn't a thing for me, my mind is always going a million miles an hour, and I love it.  I like who I am and I feel like I haven't been myself, really myself, for quite some time now around those outside of my family.  I feel that I'm finally getting back to me.  I'm finally feeling comfortable showing everyone who I am again, laughing till I cry, often making no sense at all going from tangent to tangent.  But thats who I am, and I'm not afraid to be me anymore, I'm okay with the ridiculousness that is me.  Somewhere along the lines I lost that; I lost me and the confidence to show who I was in my true form.  But no longer.

The magic that you make out of your own world emanates into other peoples worlds.  Your energy is real.  It almost becomes tangible as it eeks through the vibes of those around you.  Positive mindset, positive vibes, right?  So much of your everyday vibrations, your everyday magic, lets call it, puts you in touch with a certain interactive point in the world around you.  Let that point be a good one.  You can find and make magic happen just by being conscious of all the positive vibrations you can give and receive.  Find fun in it all.  Look for the blessings in disguise.

Our physical condition is determined largely by our emotional condition, and our emotional life is profoundly regulated by our thought life
— Norman Vincent Peale

I hope that none of you are the type of people to tear others down.  To try and feel better about your state by destroying the way that others live their lives, I hope not.  I've seen, as I'm sure many of you have, people put down or knock others lifestyle, personality, talent or lack-thereof, and appearance, to appease their own.  I think its totally wrong.  I think its okay to agree to disagree and I believe you should put yourself in someone else's shoes and remember that they have a story too.  Just like you, they are human, they come from somewhere, they have dreams and faults and feelings.

I think that it is important to remember that you are human.  Go easy on yourself.  We are our own worst critics and I think it can really do some damage from a self-reflection point if you grow negative thoughts in your brain.  I'm not saying to not strive for the best, you should indeed always try to get better and move forward.  I just think it is important to cut yourself a break.  And to be kind to yourself.   So please, remember that your thoughts are much more far reaching than you think.

Protecting the Asset

The best asset we have for making a contribution to the world is ourselves
— Greg McKeown

You must invest in the complete you.  Every bit of you, without skimping.  You must invest in your mind, your body, and your spirit.  If you don't take the time to, you might miss the opportunity to offer the world something that no one else can, a full and unique you.  I have been taking the time to invest in myself.  It's hard and believe it or not, actually takes work.

There might be backlash from those around you that don't fully understand or take the time to really open their eyes to what it is you are after.  But don't let that discourage you.  I've realized that if I don't value and put myself first, things I don't want filling that space, start to take up room, and clearing it all back out can be a lengthy process.

Start now.  Invest in yourself so that you can give the world something that no one else can.
